Yes you need to format it. With a new floppy, preformatting is almost universal, but with a hard drive it's not possible to know in advance what operating system will be on it. And not only do you have to format it, you have to partition it too. If you're a total newbie, let the installer auto-partition for you; I recommend reading one of the HOWTOs on disk partitioning, though.
Basically you can get by with (1) a swap partition about twice the size of your machine's RAM (2) a linux partition with a "mount point" of "/" When you know more you can fine-tune the allocations, but this will get you goin.
