As root, check /etc/modules.conf . If there are no sound related lines
there add the following lines:

alias sound-slot-0 snd-als4000
above snd-als4000 snd-pcm-oss

After a reboot (there are other ways of course) and 
unmuting / raising volumes (see earlier replies) you should have sound.
