VMWare is basically the same thing (and there are a few other x86 emulation packages out there - Bochs x86 is another) whereby you have an emulated "virtual" computer in a window - and can install any OS you desire within that emulated environment. Great for testing, or for "sandboxing" - for security or application/network development.
