how about posting your '/etc/lilo.conf' and '/etc/fstab'.
also, when system boots, what are ide locations reported by bios? what progs are you using to burn from cli and from x-window? did you try burning cd at lower speed than cd is rated?
if you can see cdr drive led during burn and cd shows partial burn, then you have 'indications' of accessing cdr drive and that you can burn, thus leading to burner prog config error, buffer size, poor quality cd, or, you picked a copy protected cd.
