Try the following :

pppd connect 'chat "" ATDTxxxxxxxx ogin: xxxxxx word: xxxxx' /dev/ttyS1 38400
mru 296 lock debug crtscts modem defaultroute

the above is all on line and replace the xxxxxxs with phone number, login, and
password.
