Well that depends on what codec you are missing...what is the file
extension of the movie, and/or what errors do you get if you run

mplayer [name of movie]

in a terminal?

I'm not sure what you mean here, but I'll take a wild guess. Sometimes
if you download a file with a P2P app, and there are duplicate files, it
will rename the dupe with something like ".01", then your file manager
will display it as a text file or something. Simply rename the file,
removing the extraneous extension so that it is just .avi or .mov or
whatever, and mplayer should then load it.
