Some setups have a option for disconnecting after X minutes of 
inactivity.   This could be easily checked  with continuing activity.

have a conexant 56k v92 modem
all fine, working away,
but hangs up every 15mins. on the button.
i re-configured it to automatically redial and this works fine
but interrupts downloads.
here's a copy of the modem log:

OK
ATDT1890 201 564
CONNECT 115200
any suggestions???
