[newbie] HP Laserjet 1000

I am using Mandrake 9.0 Power Pack. I would like to go M$ free. The only thing stopping me is I can't get my Laserjet 1000 printer to work. Does anybody know how to get this printer to work? I would love to ditch Windows, but I won't if I can't get this printer to work. I don't know diddly about Linux, hence being on the newbie list.
