In a terminal type: aumix -q <enter> to see whether all your volumes are "zeroed." If they are, try: aumix <enter> then try to load the defaults you had previously set, or to reset manually and save them. Then become super user in that terminal and type: service alsa start <enter> or service sound restart <enter> Of course if the volumes aren't zeroed then something else is wonky and will require further investigation.
