I also am interested in the answer.  Since installing 9.1, I haven't
been able to shut down without "shutdown now" or ctl-alt-backspace.

Didn't care because shutdowns are rare here.

Anyway I've used the 3 finger salute probably 30 times or so with no
trauma indicated in the past year.
