Well, if you have the CD, cdparanoia is what I use.

Well, yes. I've gotten a few cd's from usenet - they are encoded
usually at a fairly good rate (160 or 192, occasionally higher), 44.4K
stereo of course. It's hard to distinguish the quality differences 
between the different formats. For serious stuff I'd be inclined to
decode from 224kbps sources if they were available. 

I'm sending a few things up (shickele mix among others) and the last
few shows have come out very well, because I use mplayer and dump
stream first, and then convert that (via sox & oss/dsp) to a wave 
file. Before I was recording the live streams to mp3 and then de-
compressing that and then doing the edits, burns, and reencoding. I
mostly use 160 kbps for those shows -- they're 1 hr long.
