I have a system running Mandrake 9.0 which was working fine, then for no apparent reason, began this strange behavior:
When booting, everything is normal through lilo. It sits there for a few seconds with "Linux" selected, then when you would expect Linux to launch, the whole screen goes blank except 1 pixel in the top left corner. No changes were made between the last time it worked properly and when this problem began. Ctrl-alt-backspace has no effect. Ctrl-alt-F1 has no effect.
