I have exactly the same problems with the browser (don`t use the mailer):

Higher versions of Mozilla did not change anything for me.

Upon advice I got locally I downloaded Firebird v. 0.7 from mozilla.org and
installed it completely in my home directory and I am very satisfied: it
never crashed and is much faster than Mozilla. But there is no mailer
included with firebird.
