You should have a user for yourself with your home directory (make sure it exists), a user ID greater than or equal to 500, a Login Shell of /bin/bash, and a Primary Group that is the same as your user name. If not, mess with the settings until it's like that, and reboot. If that doesn't work, then I'm not sure.
