This doesn't address your Mandrake problems, but when I had that problem 
with a couple of other books I took them to a copy/print shop and had 
them slice off the binding and bind them with a metal comb. It worked 
very well, and was cheap. The pages now lie flat, or even can be folded 
back into a single page size, and I didn't lose any page margins. Since 
the books are better than they were I consider it a worthwhile 
investment.
