Thanks for the advise. It didn't resolve my problem but it did point to the cause of the problem.

Stranger yet when I boot up with"old linux" the itemized features is headed by"welcome to Mandrake 9.2" And indeed it may be because many of my desktop items are missing including Kmail, my email messages are still in file the program is missing. Conversly when I bootup using the "linux" menu item I get the new screen for Mandrake Linux 9.2 followed by the situation stated below.

With 9.1 I had no problem booting with the graphic format.
I just did what I think was a correct upgrade using three disks to version 9.2
But instead of the usual screen for logging on I get the following.
A menu listing the following
linux
- nonfb
floppy
2421-13
old_linux
old_linux- nonfb
failsafe

When I chose "linux" I get the following:

Booting the system
Mandrake Linux release 9.2 (Five Star) for i586
kernel 2.4.22-mdk on an i686 /tty1
local host login:
(I login with my root ID "owen")
Last login Sun Mar7 1223.51 on VC/1
[EMAIL PROTECTED] owen]$

Help! how do I get the nice graphic login screen similar to the one I had in 9.1/
Owen

Owen,
When you login, type X, and press enter to start the X server. After you're in, go into Mandrake Control Center. Go into System, then Display Manager to choose a graphical login. The boot screen is Lilo, which is what most people use(I think.) I'm not sure what it was like before, as I've never used Mdk9.1, but if you want to use Grub, go to Boot>>Bootloader to configure it.
