Lines 140-144 show sb Init - this gives a line on the screen at boot
Loading sound module (sb) [OK]
Just after activating swap.
Line 409 gives another, between loading NFS statd and loading the mixer
settings.
Line 57 shows pnp bios disabled - the Setup menu (Del at boot) has
pnp-aware OS set to "yes". I had though this might have affected the
detection of the card, but it seems to have no effect. The card is
supposed to be pnp.

Greg: Thanks, but alsa is not used here.

Summary: Thanks all, I now have a functional sound system (though not
the prettiest :-)

Cheers
Dex
