open a terminal
go to the directory where you down loaded it
type tar xzvf  gnuplot-4.0.0.tar.gz
the file will be unpacked
type ls  the directory listing will come up
you will see a sub directory named  gnuplot-4.0.0
cd to that directory
type ./configure
type make
type su (root password)
prompt will change to #
type "make install" (w/o quotation marks)
Type exit or close terminal
you should be good to go
