Hardware: ThinkPad X21 with UltraBay; newly obtained PCMCIA fax/modem card to use to dial up my ISP.

Question: Should the fax/modem card be inserted first
and then a new Linux installation performed or should
the card be inserted while Linux is running and it
will be recognized so that it can be configured for
use?

Question: Any fax/modem card configuration suggestions
or is it automatic?

If you are talking about a PCMCIA card, you are better off inserting it after you have Linux installed. That is because the card is susposed to be handled by hotplug. It usualy doesn't matter, but sometimes Cardbus cards will be detected as PCI cards by the installer, and harddrake will try to configure them. UNless you plan on having the card in every time you boot, this can be a problem. (On a laptop, you will probably want to turn harddrake off after you are done with the install anyway.)

Most of the configuration is automatic. About the only thing you will need to configure is the fax information if you plan on sending and recieving faxes. You will want to configure the cover page, and station ID if you are using a fax program.
