you could try:
script               (1)  - make typescript of terminal session

after you login, type:
script ~/filename.error

then start Xtart, and eventually exit your windowmanager of choice.
back at command line,  type CTRL-D or exit to stop the script
program. then  less ~/filename.error

$ man script for more .....

I tested it and it worked for me.

David, actually it doesn't seem to work .. I had to add an & to run it in the background and upon checking the file it contained only the login info for my
user.
