Also, is it > advisable to retain desktop settings considering that KDE (my choice) is > constantly being upgraded to new versioins? > Bill, your mails should have been saved OK, but somewhere (can't remember whether it was 10.0 or 10.1) Mandrake changed the structure, so that instead of the mails being in ~/Mail they are in ~/.mail. You may find that the old mails are still there, just not visible.
