Does it work OK with DVD-RW, Dick?

It should, but I have no way to tell as I have no such hardware. I assume it does, if you'll bear the same in mind as I reported in the bugs above.

I realized only much later: your question seems to imply that Kdar would actually write to CD or DVD. It doesn't. It creates an archive the size of any media (bearing in mind the bugs) and the archive should be burned to media by the user. So, my answer could also have been: It works with any media, but I haven't tried any larger than 703 Mb.

Of course. The only time I tried to use DrakBackup I found that the problem was the need for space for a huge tar file, which I didn't have. I guess that KDar will have the same need. ATM I'm still manually copying files to CD or DVD with XCDRoast. I really must get a better way sorted - it's very inefficient.

Anne

I just had a look at KDar, and it seems to have all the features I need and it looks easy to use. I've been using DrakBackup until now, which was somewhat unwieldy, so I probably haven't been backing up as often as I ought to have been!

At first glance, KDar has one enormous advantage over DrakBackup - it can be run by an ordinary user, whereas DrakBackup has to be run as root. I can understand why most of the Drak & Drake functions need to be run as root - we don't want users messing with configuration options they might not understand - but backups? Surely we should be *encouraging* users to make backups, rather than preventing it?
