I find StarOffice makes a good news reader.
Agent is about the one program everybody (including me:) can run
with wine. Most of the problems people starting out have is to get
the wine.conf file correct. The best advice I can give is to use
the instructions and the example in the wine-howto and you will get
it going. For the most part it amounts to changing the example to
reflect the drive and labels you use for your Windows mount points.
One thing I did that saved some grief was to delete the floppy and
cdrom sections, since I don't intend to run Windows apps from
either, at least not for now.
