[newbie] KMIX won't work

Hi. tried too use the Kmixer only to get the error: "MIXER FAILURE
kmix Could not open mixer      Perhaps you have no permission..........login as
root do a chmod a+rw /dev/mixer"   Ok so I did that, still won't work.

Please Help if you can
