Oh, if you WANT to boot to console mode, and start up X
manually, you might want to specify a color depth, i.e.:
startx -- -bpp 16 (16-bit mode)
or
startx -- -bpp 32 (32-bit mode)
you can also do a 24-bit mode if your system can handle
that. Some video cards & monitors can, some can't.
