I can't help with the soundcard, but have you tried configuring it with
linuxconf?
What port is the modem on? Have you tried minicom from a command line?
With that you can test each of your serial ports (ex: ttyS0, ttyS1) til
you find where the modem is. Then use that serial port instead of
/dev/modem.
