If your modem is a "Winmodem" then it cannot be configured to use with
Linux.  (not easily anyway).  I also have an internal Winmodem and ended up
going back to my external 33.6K modem.  Generally if you consult the "HowTo"
files here http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/INDEX.html  you
should find the answers you require.
