If you are using the distribution version for install try getting and
updated version for XFree86 (I think it has gone from 3.3.5 to 3.3.6). It
worked for me.
I think this was mentioned in some earlier messages

get linux Mandrake 6.1 installed on my system but when I logon I get an
error message telling me that the display could not be started...or
