Help, I was replacing the CD-ROM drive in a collegues linux-box (he's
evaluating it).

When I booted the computer, it recognised the CD-ROM drive ok and it works
fine, but it did do a check disk routine and found a couple of inodes it
should delete.

Now, when it boots to runlevel 5 (X), which is the default. I get the plain
vanilla X without any Window Manager!!!.

I can log in with runlevel 3 (no X), and type startx, and it starts, after a
while, elightenment (I must get him to use a WM for a less powerful system)

There are no incriminating messages in /var/log/messages or anything
perculiar in dmesg output.

the link /etc/X/prefdm points to gdm as the display manager. Could it be
possible that gdm is at fault, or am I barking up the wrong tree.
