[newbie] kppp connection

When I try to use Kppp to connect to the internet, as user or root the
pppd daemon dies after connection.  The error log says that kppp cant
find a password for the server.  How can I fix this.  

I can get on using netconf with no trouble.

I am using Mandrake 7.0 with a NE2000 card.
