actually, Michael,
when I was having the problem the disc was reported as being ejected. I
could hear sounds from everyplace else though.
But it's now working . I went to the properties of the 'kscd' cdplayer, and
changed the link from /dev/cdrom to /dev/cdrom2 ( my regular CD-ROM drive
