tar xf filename.tar if the file name has a tar extension
tar xzf filename.tar.gz if the file name has tar.gz extensinos
then cd to to the new folder after you tar the file and run ./setup or
something, depends on the name of the program installer .
if you want to make StarOffice so that everyone can use it ...you have to
set permission for it .
in KDE I think you just right click and permission pref. if you're in
terminal mode
look up on the keyword chmod on the man page
something like chmod ur+rwx filename
