[newbie] Install dies at the Config X stage

Physical box has two HDD
1st one is for Windows
2nd for Linux

I've attempted several installs and upgrades to get X to start after logging
in.  I can ping and telnet so I'm working, but only at the command prompt.

So... if I forget about trying to go through a fresh install or an upgrade
to fix this problem - how do I make sure everything will work once I'm in
KDE ... and if it doesn't then I have to RPM what?  etc.

any leads are greatly appreciated.
