What is your connection speed?
I had the same problem
I had to lower my connection speed to 33K

Preferences
Connection
I lowered the Normal Bandwith to 33K
and the Maximum Bandwith to 56K.
Everything was OK after that. You might have to lower the Normal even more....
Gosh, this is scary, ME giving Linux advice.... :-)
