Ok, there are two ways to solve this problem.

First, right click the .tgz file and select archiver from there.  That
should list it properly.

The other method is from text.  switch the name from .tgz to .tar.gz
then 'gunzip [file]'
then 'tar -xvf [file]'

Off the top of my head, I don't know why archiver lists the file the way it
does (when you click it), but this is the solution I have come up with
