Thanks.  I did figure it out.. but it wasn't the answer I was hoping
for..

I ended up giving up on OpenSSH and going to ssh.org http://www.ssh.org/
I followed their download area http://www.ipsec.com/download/

It installed, setup the host keys and "just worked" the first time.


If you can't login to the other host

1:   make sure that sshd is running on the host you want to login to.
2:   if you have access to that host..  tail -f /var/log/messages to
watch
what happens when you attempt the login.
