You can start it straight from the text console :
        xinit -e gnome -- :1

Or first start a "nude" x session :
        xinit -- :1
And then, from the xterm that will appear (put the mouse cursor in it to
give it the focus), start whatever wm you want to try (enlightenment,
blackbox, gnome, window maker...)
