hi all,

i remember that when i first tried out linux (redhat 4.1), it was
supposed to run on anything, i guess that today with a distribuution
like mandrake 7 this isn't neccessarily the case.

i have been given (temporarily) an old 486 DX-66 with no cd-rom drive, a
504mb hard drive and 8mb of ram,

a) can i copy over the mandrake cd to the drive minus rpms that i dont
want to install and still get install to work?
b)can i do this and still have networking capabilities? (still have to
buy two cheap cards - unless there's another way to connect the
machines? i just want to learn about networking, peformance isn't an
issue)
c) what rpms should i copy over to the hard drive?
d) anything else i should know (kernel optimisation - i made that phrase
up!- etc.)
e) when i have to give the machine back, what is the minimum i could
install on it for useable but basic office and net usage, in X?

this could be an involved answer so any urls etc. would be gratefully
received
