Dariusz,
I understand your term, "on the fly", to mean that you want to resize a
partition you are now using. Take a look at GNU Parted.
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/parted.html
It is both a program you can install on your system and you can create a
boot disk that will allow you to resize, destroy, create, your root
partition. The root partition cannot be mounted while it is being
resized, hence the need for a boot disk. It has worked quite well for
me. Parted is also free and does not require a serial number 8^).
