I finally reinstalled the development installation. This time, it works well. The problem was that I updated too many things at one time. In addition, I downloaded the kernel 2.2.16-9 and used the update feature to update the kernel header, source and document files. If you download the header and source files, and then double-click on the them, you may get an error message - referring to kernel 2.2.15 header files etc. etc. Weird but its fixed.
