Ok, playing with the transmission packet size can make a difference, but it
depends on the line quality.

If you have good line quality then increasing the packet size works, as you
cut down on dunnage like routing header information.  However, if the line
is poor and you get dropped packets, you have a larger packet to re-send,
which slows things down.  In that case, reducing the packet size can speed
things up.
