The default router would also be helpful to get the connection running. Usually
the DNS server is on a different subnet than user networks, so TCP/IP needs to
know what the IP address is of the router on your subnet so it can contact the
DNS server. Then, when the DNS sends back IP addresses of a different subnet
then you are on, it will also use the default route to start looking for the IP
address on the Internet.

I usually configure these things while installing, but I have seen GUI utils
which Mandrake sends along where you can configure these params later.
