Try alt-ctrl-+ and/or alt-ctrl-- (use the ones on the numeric keypad) and
see if you can change to a lower-resolution video mode for X.  Then login
and reconfigure the high resolution mode for X.  It could be the monitor
selection, too.  I had a NEC XV17+, but selecting that one from the list
never worked.  I ended up selecting a generic 1024x768.
