I had a similar problem with my Toshiba laptop and the solution is acced to the bios setup menu (you know, starting the computer use F1 or Del or the key appropriate for your computer) and dissable the automatic configuration of PCMCIA in your notebook. Now my laptop runs Mandrake 7.2 fine and look pretty.
