[newbie] X windows crashed

Hi all,
 I have Mandrake 7.2 installed. As of this morning my Xwindows fails to
start with the following error.

_FontTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

any clues to what might be causing this and how to fix it??
