Grant:
The short answer is, "Lots of places". Here are some things I've
learned:
1. If it's an external modem that plugs into a com port, it should be
OK. (Notice the use of the weasel word "should" -- never underestimate
other people's creativity.) One neat thing about these modems is that
you get a lot of flashing lights to entertain you.
2. If it's an external USB modem, maybe. Depending on your hardware,
distribution and version, the USB thing might be a hassle.
3. If it's an internal ISA modem, probably. However, if it features
plug-and-play, make sure it can be jumpered to configure it to a
specific com port and IRQ. This is what I'm doing. No lights, but one
less power wart and more desk space. Cheaper, too.
4. If it's an internal PCI modem, I'd be suspicious. Some work, but many
don't.
5. If it says "Windows XX only" on the box, put it down and keep
looking. However, if the box says that it does work under Windows, that
may be only a note of reassurance to the computing-impaired, and it may
work with Linux. Keep reading.
6. If the price is under $50, put it down and keep looking.
7. Some manufacturers will come out and say that their product will work
with Linux. For what it's worth, Zoom's website
(www.zoomtel.com/modemsna.html) allows you to search for those Zoom
modems that do work with Linux. Other manufacturers may do the same.
8. A very detailed list of what works and what doesn't is available at
www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html. There is a lot more information
about modems and Linux at that site, too, and it's well worth spending
some time there. Make that your next destination.
9. There is also a site (I think it's www.linmodems.com, but I'm not
certain) that addresses this problem. IIR, though, it is aimed more at
the poor guy who is stuck with a winmodem and is trying to make it work.
