[newbie] windows documents

I have a problem in taking windows documents (mostly wordpad created)
from my mount/windows directory into my linux drive.  Both kword and konqeror
give me about half of the first page and no more.  Both usually hang 
afterwards.   Anyone know which program would read these documents properly?
