PPP on my Mandrake 8.0 installation is behaving oddly. (Installed on a '99 iMac DV SE.) If I go to the Mandrake control centre and launch ppp, it connects once, then hangs up, then tries to connect again, and can't because the modem is still locked by another process, then tries a third time and finally succeeds. I can connect to remote web sites, so the connection seems to be fully functional. As far as I can tell from /var/log/daemons/info, all this is being run by ifup-ppp, which is a script. I can't read scripts very well. Nor can I figure out how to run this from anywhere but the control centre, which has to be logged in as root. Any help gratefully received. David Chart
