Thanks, that did the trick.  I now have in /etc/modules

scsi_hostadaptor

and in /etc/modules.conf I have (among other things)

probeall scsi_hostadaptor advansys
alias scsi_hostadaptor advansys

That seems to deal with things appropriately on boot.  Thanks, all, for the
