I have to say that I only use the modem for connecting to the internet. I 
don't send any fax's or save messages or connect any speakers or microphones 
to it.  It has always been recognised and setup automatically by mandake 
(7.2, 8.0 and 8.1). The only one thing I have always had to do was set the 
modem volume slider to the middle (Kpp Config modem tab). The default setup 
was always no volume and without adjusting that slider the modem would never 
dial for some reason.

Hope these other settings might help;
